CTSI Training Opportunities
This page describes training programs managed by CTSI, including programs for students, professionals, and faculty.
Training in Clinical Research (TICR)
The TICR program offers a broad array of educational opportunities for junior faculty, fellows, and advanced predoctoral students at UCSF.
- Summer Clinical Research Workshop: 8-week summer program consists of three courses that address research design, career development and ethics. This is the starting point for all clinical research training at UCSF.
- Advanced Training in Clinical Research (ATCR): year-long program for health scientists who desire rigorous training in the methods and conduct of clinical research.
- Master's Degree in Clinical Research: two-year course of study that includes ATCR, some additional courses, and mentored supervision of a clinical research thesis.
- Individual Courses: UCSF faculty, fellows, students may take most TICR courses on an individual basis.
CTSA KL2 Scholars Program
The CTSA KL2 Scholars career development awards provide training, mentoring, infrastructure and protected time for junior faculty to pursue multidisciplinary clinical research. Clinical research is defined broadly, and includes translational research, patient-oriented research, clinical trials, epidemiologic research, and outcomes research. The program includes a master's degree in clinical research for those who do not have such training, a supportive environment, start-up research funds, 1/2 day each week of work-in-progress seminars, and access to core faculty who provide expertise and guidance in research design, measurement and questionnaire methods, study coordination, data management, statistical analysis, publishing and presenting research, and grant writing. In 2007 the KL2 program is in its third year and has 31 scholars—22 with salary from the CTSA KL2 program and 9 with salary from K23’s and other K12 sources.
Resident Training Program
Many graduate medical education progams at UCSF are working to facilitate clinical and translational research opportunities for residents who plan to make research a part of their careers. CTST has established a research elective and other initiatives to help promote residents' career development. The goals are to create opportunities for all residents to gain a foundational understanding of clinical and translational research methods and evidence-based medicine skills, and to inspire and facilitate residents to pursue future opportunities for career development as investigators.

Training for Students
Pathways to Careers in Clinical & Translational Research (PACCTR)
The PACCTR program is designed to train predoctoral students from all four UCSF schools with the aim of launching students toward careers as independent researchers. The program is designed to be flexible to meet the needs of students and includes both didactic and practicum components.

Clinical Research Center Training Opportunities
The Clinical Research Center offers training opportunities to enhance clinical and translational research training and career development throughout UCSF. We welcome students' inquiries for training, especially in the area of research in Bionutrition and Nursing.
